Win A Copy Of "The Three Laws Of Performance" For A Tag Line.
by Miki SaxonOh for the memory of youth; not memories, but the ability to remember what I’m doing.
Last July I started looking for a new tagline. Even though I’m stuck committed to the blog’s name I want something that reflects my take on leadership as opposed to the generally accepted view.
Like any blogger I asked my then readers what they thought, received some interesting suggestions and promptly forgot about it.
The subject recently came up again, so I looked up the post and here are what I think are the best from those suggestions.
Eric Eggertson, who used to write CommonSensePR, gave me a number of suggestions, among them Seize the future and Inspire and achieve;
I came up with Seize the initiative;
Luke suggested Miki Tells You How It Is;
Phil Gerbyshak took Luke’s idea and came up with No Spin, Just Straight Talk.
Darth Sidious suggested The Drive to thrive and also said my writings have enhanced he and his friends’ Sith philosophy! Hmm, I wonder if George Lucas is aware of that.
Back to the tag line.
What do you think? Do you like one of these or do you have a better idea that reflects the tone and philosophy of my Leadership Turn?
Leave a comment to with a new tagline or vote for one already suggested by October 1 and win a copy of The Three Laws Of Performance. If I end up using one of the above tags I’ll use Ramdom.org to decide the winner.

Hi Mark, To be honest I’m disappointed. Not that these tags aren’t good, but they are the similar to those seen everywhere.
I honestly hoped that your entry (I knew you would enter:) would have a lot more cool, kick and punch—sort of like you!

Hi Mark,
Try this:
Embrace, achieve, thrive

Miki,
Okay I’m going to sound like a consultant here, but shouldn’t your tagline be built not only on the foundation of your past and current thinking, but the course you want to chart into the future? It should also have elements of your strategic vision, what your passionate about, etc. etc.
Perhaps all of that would be self-evident if I was more in tune with your blog, having just found your blog, so my apologies for commenting before getting to know “you”.
I run a technology incubator for high-growth entrepreneurs and from time to time I do a product-oriented exercise with them called my So What exercise. We take a white board and I let them put column headings on 4-5 columns with what they say are “strategic differentiators” about their company or product. Then we take each column in turn and I basically just starting asking the question “So What”.
Each column starts to fill up with more and more detailed information, we take detours, we identify emotional drivers – we basically really get down to what strategically different about the company, the product, or the team.
I write this because usually along the way, certain key words or phrases start to pop up and many times they hint at a great tag line. Now this could be because I’m a frustrated marketer at heart and can’t help myself, but it might be an exercise to run through on your own and see what pops up. I’m not sure how good it will work without an independent facilitator, but my two cents worth.
I’ve only read this one post – but if I had to come up with something off the top of my head that fit your topic and imagery, how about “Driving straight to excellence”?

Taking the road less traveled
Otherwise, I like Phil’s.

Hi Dave and Donnie, I usually respond separately, but your two comments dovetail so well I’m wondering if you know each other.
Dave, I’ve been doing a lot of what you described for quite awhile. The problem is I have a relatively heretical view of leadership that is the basis of both Luke’s and Phil’s suggestions.
Prior to my taking Leadership Turn over the information offered, while excellent, was along more traditional lines, while I’ve gone in a different direction.
I like Donnie’s because it indicates that what you’ll find here is different.
I’d like to find the perfect word to add that would say at a glance that what you will find here is different; I keep looking at words such as unorthodox, unconventional, radical. Or is that too extreme?
I hope you’ll both come back and add additional thoughts, I really need help!

Miki,
I think ultimately, you are the one that needs to come up with the tagline, if you want one. We can give you ideas, maybe even inspiration, but I think the “flash of inspiration” has to come from you. Only you have the passion and the insight uniquely individual to you.
You may also want to consider if you really need a tagline. I happen to like them, but they do have to work and add something to your brand. It really IS the content that drives your blog and you are not missing anything by not having a clever tagline. I consider it a “nice to have”.
I’m not particularly fond of the adjectives you threw out (unorthodox, radical, etc.) They sound to me to carry a bit harder edge than you may want. If it was me, I might think about adjectives more like different, unique or challenging.
Assuming you want to keep playing off the word “turn” along with the driving theme, some thought-provokers might be:
“The road less blogged”
“Turning Leadership into ___________”
Good Luck!

Dave, I realize that the final decision is mine, but it is my readers who stoke my passion, so it’s only fair that they have a say. Dreaming up tag lines is never easy, but brainstorming it in a vacuum of one makes it far more difficult.
I like ‘the road less’ idea and am hoping to combine that concept with some of the others. Stay tuned for the results:)

Miki – didn’t mean to imply you didn’t know that, just poorly worded. What I meant was more I think what you just said: we provide the brainstorming and input, and you synthesize it all in a way that makes sense to you.
I’ll be interested to see what you (we) come up with…

Hi Dave, interesting that a couple of people who make their living communicating still have misunderstandings:)
I hope to synthesize over the weekend and will get back to everyone next week. (Heh, public commitment yields higher accountability and accomplishment:)
