Golden Oldies: Expand Your Mind: Brain Exploration

Poking through 14+ years of posts I find information that’s as useful now as when it was written.

There’s a lot of exciting exploration going on these days in space and under the sea, but some of the most exciting is the ongoing exploration of the human brain.

Most people recognize a certain validity in the old maxim ‘clothes make the person’, but would you believe that clothes can actually improve cognitive ability?

If you wear a white coat that you believe belongs to a doctor, your ability to pay attention increases sharply. But if you wear the same white coat believing it belongs to a painter, you will show no such improvement.

Oh, goody; once again corporate America is hijacking brain research to sell more (just what we all need) stuff.

…neuromarketing…helped researchers decode secrets such as why people love artificially colored snack food and how to predict whether a pop song will be a hit or a flop.

This next essay looks at how love affects your brain and you might wonder about its business application, but the information on how relationships change brain chemistry is as applicable to you and your boss and business colleagues as it is to you and your romantic partner—more so, perhaps, considering the hours spent in work-related relationships exceeds those spent on personal ones.

A RELATIVELY new field, called interpersonal neurobiology, draws its vigor from one of the great discoveries of our era: that the brain is constantly rewiring itself based on daily life.

Have you ever wondered why you acted/reacted a certain way? Could it be because of a cat you have, had or visited at some point?

Jaroslav Flegr believes a “latent” parasite may be quietly tweaking the connections between our neurons, changing our response to frightening situations, our trust in others, how outgoing we are, and even our preference for certain scents.

And before you start laughing, consider the words of Stanford’s Robert Sapolsky,

“My guess is that there are scads more examples of this going on in mammals, with parasites we’ve never even heard of.”

Finally, an all natural, fully organic, multi-useful way to improve brain function—and it’s free! Additional benefits include potentially improved business functions and a myriad of benefits to your social life from more ways to meet chicks/guys to choosing restaurants and enjoying vacations.

Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.

Golden Oldies: Management is Like Coffee

It’s amazing to me, but looking back over more than a decade of writing I find posts that still impress, with information that is as useful now as when it was written.

Golden Oldies is a collection of what I consider some of the best posts during that time.

There’s not a lot to add to this post. The cited research is still accurate, as is the results comparison. That said, many managers are still providing too much, too little or, worse, none at all. But their complaints haven’t diminished, nor their solution to shift the responsibility to their people, instead of recognizing that they are the ones who need to change.

But, as one commented recently, if you do everything recommended by the experts you would use so much of each person’s time that productivity would tumble and even the best coaching would have a negative impact.

Which is why I say that management and coffee are similar.

In the right amount coffee is good for your brain and may help you live longer.

The right amount of management/coaching is good for the brain in that it provides challenges that foster growth; it also lowers frustration and stress, which enhances mental and physical health.

According to the research, the “right” amount of coffee is around 20 ounces a day, i.e., one venti-size Starbucks.

That equates to the most effective management/coaching, which provides all the information needed to do the job at one time (not more nor less) and then gets out of the way while staying accessible if needed.

Many of the coffee-fueled are more likely to drink three to five ventis a day, which is detrimental to health and longevity.

A comparable amount of management/coaching is detrimental to health, productivity and retention.

Maintain Your Brain

Quite a difference from the old view that your brain stops making new neural connection around puberty.

Another new idea is that your brain needs just as much exercise as the rest of you, especially as you age.

Thinking is essentially a process of making neural connections in the brain.  To a certain extent, our ability to excel in making the neural connections that drive intelligence is inherited.  However, because these connections are made through effort and practice, scientists believe that intelligence can expand and fluctuate according to mental effort.

It’s simple; we’re talking Pilates for your brain.

And a simple way to do it, thank to some of the leading brains at Stanford and, what else, but a startup.

Now, a new San Francisco Web-based company has taken it a step further and developed the first “brain training program” designed to actually help people improve and regain their mental sharpness.  Called Lumosity, it was designed by some of the leading experts in neuroscience and cognitive psychology from Stanford University.

UPDATE: While Lumosity has been debunked by the FTC, the science of using your brain and building new neural paths is well founded.

And, like physical exercise, you don’t want to wait until age makes the exercise a necessity.

Your brain will thank you. And as you age your family, friends and the healthcare system will all thank you.

After all, you don’t want to end up an old codger or biddy.

Quotable Quotes: Left Brain Inspiration

You know the old saying ‘different strokes for different folks’? It’s the same with inspiration; the words have to resonate inside for them to have any effect. When reading the quotes I offer to inspire you keep in mind that they are the ones that work for me, which usually means they have left-brain appeal.

I find this one from Christopher Columbus to be amusing; nothing like being famous for restating the obvious, “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination.” I wonder if that would work for me?

However, William Adams hit the nail on the head when he said, “Most of us are just about as happy as we make up our minds to be.”

Rita Golden Gelman offers a wonderful recipe for joy and details the reasons it works, “Risk-taking, trust, and serendipity are key ingredients of joy. Without risk, nothing new ever happens. Without trust, fear creeps in. Without serendipity, there are no surprises.”

Tom Bodett does a wonderful job of explaining the difference between school and life—remember that work is part of life, “The difference between school and life? In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.”

Aaron Burr follows a very smart path and you could do worse than follow him, “The rule of my life is to make business a pleasure, and pleasure my business.”

Good communication is the only sustainable way to bridge the differences between you and the people you meet in all parts of your life, but it’s not always easy. Donella Meadows explains why clearly and succinctly, “Your paradigm is so intrinsic to your mental process that you are hardly aware of its existence, until you try to communicate with someone with a different paradigm.”

And Beca Lewis provides a great approach to recognizing thoes differences and overcoming them, “Yearn to understand first and to be understood second.”

McKinsey alumni Kevin P. Coyne and Shawn T. Coyne offer a seven point guide that will make your efforts much more productive.

  1. Know your organization’s decision-making criteria.
  2. Ask the right questions
  3. Choose the right people
  4. Divide and conquer
  5. On your mark, get set, go!
  6. Wrap it up
  7. Follow up quickly

Sounds like common sense, right? But you’ll see from the explanations how habit, misconceptions and politics often undermine these efforts.

And remember, while the first six points assure you of a productive effort this time, ignoring number seven will cripple not only this time, but all your next-times, too.
