If the Shoe Fits: Visualize Your Culture

Friday, February 27th, 2015

A Friday series exploring Startups and the people who make them go. Read all If the Shoe Fits posts here

5726760809_bf0bf0f558_mYesterday we talked about open communications and how powerful it is when part of cultural DNA.

Visual communication was recommended, with the caveat, “processes and information that can not be represented visually are probably too convoluted and bureaucratic.”

XPLANE’s Dave Gray seems to agree.

Every company has a culture, but it can take time to learn, and the stated culture can often differ significantly from what people actually experience.

At XPLANE we have created a visual map of our culture, to guide our teams in daily decision making and help them make choices that are consistent with what we stand for and who we want to be.

Smart; very smart.

If the Shoe Fits: Angels and Infographics

Infographics are all the rage.

Done well, they present large amounts of information in a fast, graphic manner for today’s visually-addicted populace that can’t be bothered to read text.

VentureBeat provides a great example.

Did you know?

The average angel is 47 years old, makes $90,000 a year, invests in one out of every 10 deals he sees, shovels $37,000 into each deal, and lives in California.

Enough writing? Here is VB’s graphic explanation.

Entrepreneurs: Great Presentations

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

In a recent post Mark Suster opens the curtains to the reality behind the hype of being an entrepreneur.

As usual, he provides great info and insight, but there is a hidden jewel in it and that’s the slide show from his talk.

I work with entrepreneurs (and others) on slide presentations and it seems that no matter how many times they hear/read/see great examples they still have a hard time.

So before reading the post look at the slides.

Are his points obvious? Do you understand what he is saying from just the slides?

When a presentation is done right the whole story is coherent and clear from the pictures and a few simple words on the slides.
