The Pragmatic Idealist
by Miki SaxonI had brunch today with two friends.
During the conversation one told me that he couldn’t believe I was still such an idealist at my age (older than dirt:).
His wife disagreed, saying that she couldn’t believe how cynical I had gotten.
They are both right.
I am, and always have been, a pragmatic idealist.
How do you become a pragmatic idealist?
By always striving to implement the ideals in which you believe, while fully functioning within the reality in which you actually live.

Dear Miki,
acr=tually as one of my septoes says, idealist has 3 opposites: materialist, realist and pragmatist.

Hi Peter, unlike your friend, I think they can be complimentary given the right MAP.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope things are going well for you!

I think I started out as an idealist and real life stepped in and forced the pragmatic on me, lol! Now because of the years of experience with having road blocks thrown in my way I think the pragmatic method of seeing the road blocks in the way has taken center stage and perhaps squashed the idealist part of me somewhat.

Hi Julie, Ideals = MAP and ethics, so most of us continue to run our lives based on our ideals even when some have been squashed a bit by the reality of living. Actually, I think the kind of pragmatism you describe can act as a pretty powerful launchpad for mature idealism.
