A Crime of the Times
by Miki SaxonAs the White Rabbit said, “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date” with you, my readers, but better late than never.
In August I wrote Felony pork, about Senator Ted Stevens, focusing on the $3.4 billion worth of pork, including the bridge to nowhere, he brought home in just the last 13 years.
Well, I’m happy to say that the king of pork was found guilty for violating federal ethics laws (sounds like an oxymoron).
“…convicted Mr. Stevens, 84, on all seven felony counts he faced in connection with charges that he knowingly failed to list on Senate disclosure forms the receipt of some $250,000 in gifts and services used to renovate his home in Girdwood, Alaska.”
Of course, he’s claims he’s innocent, plans to appeal, has no intention of resigning from Congress, and is still hoping to be reelected for another term.
“I am innocent… I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights. I remain a candidate for the United States Senate.”
Wow. Just think what would happen to your job if you were found guilty of accepting a bribe.
But this is politics and we all know that politicians live and work in a parallel universe—at least that’s the only explanation I’ve thought of.
Now I have only two wishes, the first is that he loses the election and the second that he actually serves jail time—even though it will be for the wrong crime, since pork isn’t illegal.
